Old Street Numbering Guide
.....Prior to the current system of street numbering in Galveston, there was a different system of street numbers. Occasionally in researching addresses, you may come across some odd addresses as they may be using this older system. The following is an excerpt from page 12 of the 1880-81 City Directory which explains the system. Note some of the street names were different as well!

 

THE NUMBERS

.....The house numbers are divided on Bath Avenue, or 25th Street, commencing with figure 1, east, and figure 1 on the west side of the street. The odd numbers are on the south side, and even number on the north side.

.....As will be seen by the following table, there are fifty numbers allowed to one side of each block:

..The numbers from 1 to 50 east are between Bath Ave. and 24th sts.
.... From 50 to 100, from 24th street to Tremont, or 23d street
.....From 100 to 150, from Tremont, or 23d street, to 22d street.
.....From 150 to 200, from 22d street to Centre, or 21st street.
.....From 200 to 250, from 21st or Centre street, to 20th street.
.....From 250 to 300, from 20th street to 19th street.
.....From 300 to 350, from 19th street to 18th street.
.....From 350 to 400, from 18th street to 17th street.
.....From 400 to 450, from 17th street to 16th street.
.....From 450 to 500, from 16th street to 15th street.
.....From 500 to 550, from 15th street to 14th street.
.....From 550 to 600, from 14th street to 13th street.
.....From 600 to 650, from 13th street to 12th street.
.....From 650 to 700, from 12th street to 11th street.
.....From 700 to 750, from 11th street to 10th street.

..The numbers from 1 to 50 west are from Bath Avenue between Bath Avenue and 26th street.

.....From 200 to 250, from 29th street to 30th street.
.....From 250 to 300, from 30th street to 31th street.

..The numbers from North to South are not divided, but continue on from the Bay to the Gulf. The numbers from 1 to 50, from North to South, are from Water street, or Avenue A, to Strand, or Avenue B.
