.....After the 1900 storm, there was only a railroad trestle left as a connection to the Mainland. Fires on the bridge caused delays and the Texas Railroad Commission ordered a the railways to construct a new causeway. Bickering over who was to pay for the bridge delayed construction until finally the Causeway opened in 1912.
