Greater Galveston Causeway, Galveston, Tex.
| .....The
Galveston Causeway opened in 1912 with much fanfare. The Governor
of Texas led a line of 1500 cars and cut a ribbon at the drawbridge.
It connected the island to the mainland for two rails, the interurban
trolley, and passenger vehicle access. The construction cost was
between two and three million dollars. The bridge consisted of concrete
spans that stretched across the bay. It still stands today, and
provides Galveston's only railroad access. |
