.....Built
in 1882, by Mr Kauffman and Mr. Julius Runge, it operated as a warehouse
and offices for wholesale groceries. The 1892-3 Galveston City Directory
lists the business as "Cotton Factors and Buyers, General Commission
Merchants, Agents for North-German-Lloyd Steamship Line." In
1905 a lawyer, Maco Stewart, acquired the building to serve as an
office building and headquarters for what soon became Stewart Title
Company.
