Henry Rosenberg Statue

This statue of Henry Rosenberg sits outside the front of the Rosenberg Library at the corner of 23rd & Sealy.

Henry Rosenberg was a Swiss immigrant who came to the Island at age nineteen. He became successful in dry goods and banking. His other duties included serving as the director of the Wharf Company, director of the Gulf, Colorado, and Sante Fe Railroad, and director of the Galveston Orphan's Home. He new the value of philanthropy and gave considerable funds to schools and other causes.

Upon his death in 1893, he bequeathed $400,000 for a public library.

He also created drinking fountains "for man and beast" throughout the city. Seventeen were built, but dismantled during the 1930's - 1950's. Ten survived, and have been been restored and re-installed. Also, the Texas Heroes Monument was funded through his philanthropy.
