.....Before the University of Texas Medical School, there was a medical school in Galveston, started in the year 1865. Greensville Dowell opened a school on Avenue L. This advertisement was taken out of "Flakes Bulletin" December 29, 1869.

.....Later, Dr. Dowell and Dr. Ashbell Smith formed the Texas Medical College in 1873,. Dr. Smith, being a trustee of the University of Texas, pushed hard and pursuaded the legislature to establish the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston.
