.....The Morris Lasker Residence was considered one of Galveston's most historically significant residences. It was built in 1889-1892 and was designed by Nicholas Clayton. The builder was August W. Bautsch, who constructed the residence for a grand sum of $22,000. Mr Lasker was a banker and president of a real estate firm in Galveston.
.....The house was large, featuring five bedrooms. There were two sets of stairs, front and rear, along with a library, dining room, butler's pantry, kitchen and breakfast room. .....Morris Lasker was born in Jorcain, Prussia in 1840. He emigrated to the United States at age 16. After a few years of odd jobs, he settled in Galveston and developed a large real estate business as well as several banking interests. He was director of the First National Bank of Galveston. His exploits included participation in the Civil War Battle of Galveston. His philanthropy benefitted Galveston's orphan population, with a $12,000 donation in 1912 to create the Lasker Orphan's Home. You can read more about him by clicking here to link to the American National Business Hall of Fame. .....This historic building was demolished in 1967 to make way for apartments. This created a stir in Galveston historical circles, and re-invigorated efforts to stop demolition of historical structures.
