Heidenheimer Residence - 1602 Sealy

.....This fine residence was first constructed in 1857. Originally it was constructed by Colonel John S. Sydnor, mayor, slave dealer and businessman. As mayor from 1846-47, he helped institute the city's plice and fire departments and the first city market was constructed. He also helped start a city-sponsored free school system, which later went bankrupt because no taxes were levied in its support.
.....Later it was sold to Sampson Heidnenheimer, a merchant who owned one of the largest grocery wholesalers in Texas. It was referred to often as "Heidenheimer Castle" as it had been contructed and added on in a grand castle-like style. Heidenheimer added the tower in 1885.
.....After the grade-raising, this building was not raised, but rather the fill was simply placed around the building. The building was a run-down rooming house in the 1970's, until it was finally demolished in 1974 after having been gutted by fire.
