The way it was when I got it...
The way I would like it to be...(at least the front facade)
.....The history on the
house...
.....This place was originally
built in 1899 by Mathilde Oberg, widow of Peter Oberg. The property
was valued at $1600 and in 1899 the house was built for a grand sum
of around $2300. It made it through the 1900 storm but not the multiple
owners modifications since then...
.....I believe the house was originally
one story. What you see as the second story is the original house.
Notice the blue baseboard line around the center of the house. That
is one clue, along with 10.5 foot ceilings on the second floor, and
8' ceilings on the first. Additionally in documents provided by the
Rosenberg library, it shows that in 1905 the house was raised and
something else that I can't make out the script... I believe that
is year when the first floor was added. Also, the house was duplexed
and the large front stair case was installed, cutting into the porch
so it wouldn't run out into the street!
.....The house originally had gas lighting,
an outbuilding in the rear along with a single cistern. Rear porches
have since been enclosed. Fortunately most of the windows are intact,
along with a lot of the detail on the second floor.
