From Stereoview circa 1880
.....This was
the first cathedral built in Texas and the oldest church that is still
extant on the island.
An earlier church occupied the site
in 1841, but was damaged by a storm in 1842. Later, in 1845 a gift
of 1/2 million bricks from Belgium was used to start construction of
the
building in 1847. It was dedicated on November 26, 1848. Later, Nicholas
Clayton designed the adjacent tower (1876) and in 1884, the two front
towers were lengthened to match as well.
