.....Construction on the original John Sealy Hospital was begun in 1890. A Nicholas Clayton design, the hospital was on what was the outskirts of town near the Galveston City Hospital (1845). It opened in 1891 with the University of Texas Medical School. Significant funding was provided by John Sealy, George and Rebecca Sealy, and the land was donated by the City of Galveston. .....Other buildings in the complex included the University of Texas Medical Building (now known as Ashbel Smith or Old Red , and the Nurses Home which was built later establishing the first Nursing School West of the Mississippi. .....The original John Sealy Hospital building no longer stands, but has been replaced twice by the John Sealy Hospital in 1953, and the additional John Sealy Hospital Tower in 1978 which engulfs the 1953 structure |
