.....In the 1880's, the University of Texas was looking for a place to put its Medical School. Four cities, Galveston, Houston, Austin, and Tyler were in the competition. Galveston had the size and money to support such an establishment and a $50,000 grant from John Sealy for a medical school. Dr Ashbel Smith, urged the legislature to put the center in Galveston, and they agreed. The Medical College opened in 1891 with two buildings.
