Trinity Episcopal Church, Armistice Day Parade circa 1918
.....Trinity Episcopal
Church was founded in 1841 by The Rev. Benjamin Eaton, a missionary
venturing to the Republic of Texas. He is buried beneath the altar of
the church. The main church structure was completed in 1857
and is one of the oldest churches
in Galveston.
.....The church was closed
for two years during the Civil War. It was struck by a cannon ball during
one of the battles for control of Galveston.
.....The
grounds also are home to Trinity Episcopal
School, one of Galveston's
premier private schools. Originally, the first school was opened in 1845
with 50 students, but was closed after a year due to a shortage of qualified
teachers. The current school was created in 1952 and is still operational
today. Students range from age 2 through 8th grade.
..... The church sits next to Eaton
Chapel, built later in 1879.
