Old City Hall

City Hall, Galveston, Texas

..... The original City Hall was located in the middle of 20th street, between Mechanic and Market. The location was originally city-owned property that served as a marketplace where local farmers sold their produce. When the city decided to build a city hall, the marketplace was preserved by making the ground floor the marketplace and city offices on the second and third floors. Construction began March 2, 1888 with Alfred Muller as the architect.

.....The 1900 Storm did severe damage to the building, forcing the city to remove the third floor and the clock tower. The building was never returned to its original splendor. It continued as in its capacity as city hall until 1916 when a new city hall was built. The southern part of the building was used as a fire station and the northern portion was the police station. The building was demolished in 1966.
